Whirlpool was written in a stream of consciousness, literally. I was sitting on a rock in the middle of a river near the town of Hampi in India. All I had was the A minor with a descending bass line riff and a recording walkman. The song appeared exactly as it is recorded all except for two lines in the second verse which ended "east" and "least" and were changed to "west" and "best".
The album version has drums, electric guitar, harmonium and flute. Kyrie Miskin played trombone on it at the album launch in July 2009 and joined me in duo mode for this gig at El Rocco's basement, Kings Cross, Sydney. He did a cracking job playing the trombone using a mute to great effect
